Finding your Alignment

I was reminded today of the importance and power of alignment. Alignment between my values, where I find meaning and the work I do, and how this alignment leads to satisfaction, joy and contentment.

I was starting work with a new client today, and I was preparing by reading their discovery document. I felt so connected to the work I was about to embark on with this individual, I was reminded of how things sometimes just feel like they’re clicking into place.

When we’re not aligned, we can feel discomfort, or challenging emotions. We might not realise that this is a lack of alignment in our lives, but if we listen to these emotions, feelings, this intuition it can help us create change and find alignment again.

As I reflect on the points in life where I have changed jobs, roles, returned to learning, the thing they all have in common is a lack of alignment before the change. This has sometimes manifested as a lack of connection with my employer, a feeling of dissatisfaction or disengagement or procrastination. At it’s worst its felt like self-doubt and burn out, manifesting when I’ve ignored those feelings of discomfort or dissatisfaction because I’ve felt I’ve had to stay in the situation I’ve been in.

Acknowledging this discomfort propels us towards change. It makes us consider our options and plan for action, to find ways to make this possible. This isn’t always easy, and may take time. We may have to stay with our discomfort whilst we create the conditions for change.

So how do you work towards alignment. You need to get a sense of where you want to be. Try writing about your future, you might not know exactly what this looks like, and if this is the case, start with how your future life will feel. Repeat this over the next 4 days, and see if this brings you closer to an image of your future. From here you can start to make plans how to get there.
